Skin Tag

Skin tags (scientifically called acrochordons) are small, soft, benign growths that typically appear on the skin’s surface. They are harmless and non-cancerous, but some people choose to remove them for cosmetic reasons or if they cause discomfort.

What Do They Look Like?

  • Small, flesh-coloured or slightly darker growths
  • Soft and hanging off the skin by a thin stalk (pedunculated)
  • It can vary in size from a few millimetres to a few centimetres
  • Often appear in folded areas of the skin

Common Locations:

  • Neck
  • Armpits
  • Eyelids
  • Groin
  • Under the breasts

Causes of Skin Tags:

  • Friction
  • Ageing
  • Hormonal changes
  • Genetics

Warts

Warts are small, rough, non-cancerous skin growths caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). While generally harmless, warts can be contagious and sometimes cause discomfort or cosmetic concerns.

Types of Warts & Their Locations

  • Common Warts (Verruca Vulgaris) – Rough, raised bumps usually appear on the hands, fingers, or knees.
  • Plantar Warts – Hard, grainy growths that appear on the soles of the feet, often causing pain while walking.
  • Flat Warts (Verruca Plana) – Small, smooth, flat-topped warts that often appear in clusters on the face, neck, hands, or legs.
  • Filiform Warts – Long, thread-like warts that grow around the eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • Genital Warts – Soft, flesh-coloured warts that appear in the genital area and are transmitted through sexual contact.

Causes of Warts:

Warts develop when the HPV virus infects the top layer of the skin, usually through:

  • Direct skin contact with an infected person
  • Touching contaminated surfaces (e.g., gym equipment, showers, towels)
  • Cuts or scratches that allow the virus to enter
  •  Weakened immune system, making you more susceptible

Are Warts Contagious?

Yes! Warts can spread through direct or indirect contact, so avoiding touching and practicing good hygiene is important. Treatment is recommended to prevent further spread.

Dr. Sean Leong graduated from NUS in 2012 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, where he excelled academically and received numerous awards, including the VS Rajan Gold Medal in Dermatology. He subsequently obtained a Master of Medicine (Internal Medicine) and became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of UK, before completing his Dermatology residency. Prior to joining Livingstone Dermatology, Dr. Leong gained valuable experience at National University Hospital and National Skin Centre, honing his skills in treating various dermatological conditions. He has also presented at international conferences and received recognition for his teaching and research contributions. He is currently also a Visiting Consultant at the National Skin Centre.

Dr. Leong is a dedicated dermatologist who is passionate about providing compassionate and comprehensive care to his patients. His areas of interest include general dermatology, eczema, acne and surgical dermatology.

Topical Treatments

Topical treatments are one of the most common and effective ways to remove warts caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). These treatments work by gradually breaking down the wart tissue and stimulating the immune system to fight the virus.

Liquid nitrogen/Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is a common and effective treatment for warts. It involves applying liquid nitrogen (-320°F / -196°C) to freeze the wart, destroying the infected tissue and allowing new skin to grow.

Shave Biopsy

A shave biopsy is a minor surgical procedure used to remove warts by carefully shaving off the affected skin with a scalpel. This method is typically used for diagnosing or removing stubborn warts that do not respond to topical treatments.

Carbon dioxide laser

The CO₂ laser is a powerful and precise method for removing stubborn warts by vaporizing the affected tissue. It is often used when other treatments fail, especially for deep or recurrent warts.

Intralesional MMR injection

Intralesional MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) injection is an immunotherapy treatment used to help the body’s immune system fight off stubborn or recurrent warts that do not respond to conventional treatments like cryotherapy or salicylic acid.

HPV Vaccination for Prevention

Wet Wrap Therapy
